How to Hire an AI Visibility Consultant for Your Agency

Agencies are in a tough spot right now. Teams are at capacity executing content and don’t have the time or resources to integrate AI visibility. Mastering a new expertise in-house either requires a new FT hire, or countless unbillable hours of research. But when the longtime client asks the dreaded question about where they stand in ChatGPT or another AI’s search, agencies have to make the call — do you keep up the charade or do you bring in someone who already knows the AI visibility landscape.

An AI visibility consultant is an expert who audits how AI engines describe your client, finds out who gets recommended instead and why, and builds the strategy to fix it — working alongside your team, often invisibly under your brand. Hiring one adds the expertise without adding headcount, and without sending the account out the door.

I do this for agencies across every kind of client — B2C and B2B, consumer goods to software to healthcare to nonprofits — so the process below doesn’t change with the industry.

When should an agency bring in an AI visibility consultant?

It usually starts with the client asking something the team can’t answer. Why are we invisible in ChatGPT when we’re number one on Google? Why is our traffic sliding when our rankings are holding? (That second one has a specific answer.) Other times it’s a redesign, and someone finally realizes the new site has to be built for AI to retrieve it, not just for humans and Google.

You can absolutely build this capability in-house, and some agencies should. Whether it’s your own team, your existing SEO or a dedicated specialist, it’s your call, but I don’t recommend white-knuckling it. AI visibility is new, and plenty of agencies are fumbling through it the same way brands are — no shame in it, it’s just moving faster than most teams can keep up with, especially when the learning eats unbillable hours. Bringing in a specialist is the faster path to a confident answer, and it spares your team months of trial and error — and the client you could lose while you catch up.

What does an AI visibility consultant actually do?

As an AI visibility consultant working with agencies, I don’t just provide a dashboard and list of recommendations. I set up a process that first creates a brand and industry-specific AI visibility baseline, and then provides specific optimizations and content topics — with specific definition blocks, H2s, etc. — to position the brand in AI search. And since AI visibility is a newer specialty for marketers, the brands and agencies who invest in this first will enjoy a significant head start as their competition kicks the can down the road.

And it loops. Every answer feeds the next round of research, which is the whole idea behind the AI Intelligence Loop.

The step I see most teams missing is the audience intelligence piece. Buyers using AI search are describing their situation or problem, not a short keyword phrase. A brand ranking for a high-volume keyword could be completely absent in AI if the user is typing in a specific situation they don’t address in their content. These insights go deeper than audience personas. Figuring out what questions their audience is actually asking — the raw material for the prompt audit — is exactly what the audience intelligence process is for.

How does working with an embedded fractional partner work?

As an embedded agency partner, I engage with the team the way a senior strategist would — active in your working docs and internal calls, and prepping with you before the client presentation. When a client requires AI visibility judgment, I handle the research and the strategy, and you get a monthly synthesis rather than a specialist you have to manage day to day. And if a client has specific questions related to their visibility or the process, I am on hand to join the call and explain things directly to them. This takes significant weight off the agency leads responsible for client relationships.

White-labeling your deliverables

There is an option for client deliverables to be white-labeled under the agency’s brand rather than LSX Partners.

How do agency engagements usually work — project or retainer?

It depends what your client roster or agency requires. You’ll usually start with a single project engagement, such as an AI Visibility Blueprint to set the foundation for a client. This includes a strategic assessment of the brand’s identity across AI, as well as an in-depth prompt audit. The Blueprint deliverable gives you the findings, recommendations and ready-to-implement page templates for content and structural updates ensuring optimal AI retrievability.

A client retainer starts at the same point as the single engagement, but it sets the client up for ongoing monitoring. The Blueprint serves as the AI visibility baseline, informing on-site and third-party content strategies. Retainer clients receive a monthly report of the brand’s AI visibility within their category (Share of Voice, answer mentions, citations), along with strategic recommendations and prioritizations for the next round of content.

How do you keep the client relationship clean?

You own the client relationship and make the decision whether to white-label the work or not. There is even an option for me to engage with your clients using an agency domain email address.

What should an agency look for when hiring an AI visibility consultant?

AI visibility is a newer area of marketing. If you’re considering hiring a specialist, make sure the candidate has actually implemented, measured and reported on the related KPIs. If not, you’ll be stuck with a new dashboard or report you don’t understand or know how to present to your client.

As an AI visibility expert, I believe the part you can’t fake about this work is the audience intelligence research. It requires strategic experience to identify patterns and create a plan to solve them. And while the foundation of the work is the same, every client and industry has its own nuances.

I wouldn’t be afraid to ask what tools they use either. Each tool measures things differently, and some settings may inflate numbers or give false positives. Probe how they set up their dashboards and, if they have a demo client or anonymous report, ask for them to walk through it with you.

If you’re hiring someone to represent your agency, it’s always important to make sure you like their communication style as well — especially if you’ll be having them client-facing.

I’m Laura Seelinger, AI visibility expert and founder of LSX Partners. I work embedded with agencies to fill the gap in AEO/GEO expertise and help guide their client strategies. If you’ve got a client asking questions about AI, your team doesn’t have time to “fake it till you make it.” Reach out for an intro call and let’s see how I can help your agency grow through this search evolution.

Questions I get about this

When should an agency bring in an AI visibility consultant?

Usually when a client asks something the team can't answer cleanly — why they're invisible in ChatGPT, or why traffic is sliding while rankings hold. You can learn AI visibility in-house, but it moves faster than most teams can keep up with and the learning eats unbillable hours, so bringing in a specialist is the faster path to a confident answer and spares your team months of trial and error.

What does an AI visibility consultant actually do?

An AI visibility consultant learns the client's business, runs audience intelligence to surface the questions real buyers actually ask AI, audits how the engines answer those questions today, then builds the strategy to close the gaps. The research and the audit keep feeding each other rather than being a one-time report.

Can an AI visibility consultant work under our agency's brand?

Yes. I often work embedded in the agency's team, and design dashboards to sit under the agency's brand, so the client never knows a contracted specialist was involved.

How do agency engagements usually work — project or retainer?

Agencies usually start with a single project — an AI Visibility Blueprint that sets the foundation with a strategic assessment of the brand's identity across AI, an in-depth prompt audit and ready-to-implement page templates. A retainer starts from that same baseline and adds ongoing monitoring, with a monthly report of the brand's AI visibility (Share of Voice, answer mentions, citations) and prioritized recommendations for the next round of content.

What should we look for when hiring an AI visibility consultant?

Make sure the candidate has actually implemented, measured and reported on the KPIs, not just read about them. The part you can't fake is the audience intelligence research, which takes real strategic experience. Ask what tools they use and how they set up their dashboards, since some settings inflate numbers or give false positives. And if they'll be client-facing, make sure you like their communication style.
